Wide Sargasso Sea Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In reflecting Jean Ryhs' Wide Sargasso Sea, I chose to focus mainly on Part One of the story. I approached the reading from a psychological perspective, along with a feminist analyzation. As the story begins in the mid 1840's, it was a time when slaves were newly freed and slave owners awaited compensation from the British government. It takes place in the Caribbean just a few years after slavery ended and about one year after the force of black labor had ended-- tension was great among the blacks and whites, as well as the Jamaicans and non-Jamacians.
In the case of Antoinette's mother, who was completely neglected by the other females in her town simply because she was different. She was a non-Jamacian and "because she pretty like pretty self" (p.17), as the Jamaican ladies of the town would say. Does this mean the saying that "birds of a feather flock together" is really true? I believe under many circumstances the answer is "yes."
