Confronting Mortality: A Small, Good Thing Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In A Small, Good Thing, other characters’ descriptions and impressions first depict to a reader who each character is. The characters’ true personalities and whom Carver intends for them to represent are evident only once a reader analyzes Carver’s use of religious imagery. Scotty helps influence his parents Ann and Howard that religion is an important part of their lives that they are missing. The baker also plays a role in helping Ann and Howard unite with their religion. He is first characterized as an unsociable man but as the story progresses, the baker changes. The baker transforms from a petty, psychotic character into a religious figure. In the beginning of the story the baker is portrayed as an unfriendly man. Scotty’s mother Ann describes how the “baker was not jolly” and how “there were no pleasantries between them” (207) when she is ordering the cake for Scotty’s birthday. The baker’s abruptness with Ann develops the reader’s first characterizations of him; petty, and rude. The baker continues to appear unkind when he calls Scotty’s parents constantly i......
