Shirley Jacksons short story The Lottery portrays an annual event that has been a tradition as old as the town itself. Mary Kittredge describes The Lottery as a beautifully imagined, sparely and gracefully day on a lovely June morning, the citizens of a tranquil village gather in the town square for an annul drawing. Amidst laughter and gossip, families draw slips of paper from a ballot box until housewife Tessie Hutchison receives the black mark on it and the village stones her to death as a ritual sacrifice (209). The theme of irony is present through out Jacksons The Lottery for example the setting, the participation of citizens and such as when Tessie wins.
In the opening of the The Lottery, the setting is very normal. The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; all the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green.1 There is nothing that indicates that some dreadful event soon approaches; since the setting seems very pleasant, calm and nothing out of the ordinary.
