Liberty on the Waterfront Piecing together bits of history from marine collections, Liberty on the Waterfront by Paul A. Gilje provides a lively portrait of the people, places, and ideas that constitute an American maritime culture in the late 18th and 19th century. For most of the waterfront, liberty was a highly ambiguous concept. Liberty was not only specific to each individual but also to geographic boundaries, meaning something very different on shore than it did at sea. Gilje examines the culture of the waterfront from many different angles, including what sailors thought about the push and pull of home or family, the conflict between personal and national identities, the efforts to reform sailors and their culture, and a life of unabashed freedom on shore verses the near slavery at sea. Through Liberty on the Waterfront Gilje examines liberty--and its many costs--in all of its varied meanings for those who lived on the waterfront in the Age of Revolution.
