The African Spirit in “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Over the history of literature, there have been many writers that were naturally gifted; intriguing literature just flowed from their pen with little effort needed. Langston Hughes, one of the most influential writers during the Harlem Renaissance, did just that one day riding on a train bound for Cleveland and ill with a Mexican sickness to reunite with his father (Rampersad 187). His trip led him on a ride over the Mississippi River which sparked memories. He thought about, not only what the Mississippi River, but other what rivers of their past had meant to other Negroes throughout history. From these thoughts flowed the words of the poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” (Rampersad 188). This single poem, filled with literary elements such as theme, symbolism, imagery, and diction, began Hughes’ career as his first poem published and embarked Hughes’ on a life full of achievements. In most of Hughes’ works, including “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” he expresses and builds his work around two major themes, black identity and race.
