Fear. Goals. Desires. Family. Each of these is a motivator. These are just a few things that make people tick and do what they do. Each of these are things that motivate Troy Maxson’s character. His family motivates him to do what needs to be done. His desires motivate him to restrict his boys from their dreams, whether it is because he does not want them to do better than he did or he does not want them to end up hurt like he is. His goal to be a professional ball player were torn from him, this motivates his relating everything to baseball. The biggest motivator for Troy’s character is his fear. Fear is what makes Troy up. Tory fears everything; failure, responsibility, and relationships. The Playwright, August Wilson, grew up in a broken home, not only were his parents split up but his father was white and his mother was black. August began writing at an early age, it seems like writing was his escape from his troubles.
