PROHIBITION: The Eighteenth Amendment
Prohibition of alcohol in the United States existed from 1920 to 1933. The story of how it came to be, what it was really like and how it effects American life is an interesting story of unusual ideas, surprising events and unexpected outcomes.
To understand how prohibition came into effect, one must understand the background behind alcohol and Americans. As the Puritans loaded provisions onto the Mayflower before heading to the 'new world,' they brought more beer on board than water. This reflected their traditional drinking beliefs, attitudes and behaviors. Alcohol to them was a normal part of life. Their religion taught them that alcohol was created by God and in that case, good. For hundreds of years, their English ancestors had enjoyed beer and ale. Both in England and the early America, people of both sexes and of all ages, typically drank beer with their meals. (Hanson)
