For Love of Money Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Throughout history, wealth and riches have sometimes made but most often broken the lives of many Americans. Although materialism has become widely accepted and encouraged in society, it has also been proven to be vastly destructive. The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a representation of American society during the 1920’s. Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald uses the literary technique of characterization to demonstrate how materialism corrupted America. Through the characters of Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and Myrtle Wilson, Fitzgerald is able to reveal the lies and deceit that was prevalent throughout America in the era known as The Roaring 20’s Jay Gatsby is an intriguing character that creates a life of lies for love, or at least his idea of love. Gatsby lives a life of riches and wealth. For example, when the narrator Nick Carraway first moves to West Egg and is describing his new neighborhood, he explains the house next to his by saying “The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard-it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Norma......
