Modern methods of treatment usually have some underlying theory (i.e. paradigm) that states a possible cause of the disorder (i.e. its possible aetiology) and tries to explain the reasons why the treatment works in conjunction with this. However, success of the treatment does directly support the paradigm, it only infers that the paradigm stands true. For example, we know that the drug 'asprin' works as a successful treatment for headaches. With this evidence one could put forward the basic paradigm that states "Headaches result from lack of asprin", but the evidence does not directly support this, instead it infers that the paradigm has some weight (If only to a biologically naïve individual). The more evidence that is compatible with a paradigm, the more inferences can be drawn and the more likely the paradigm is to explain the true aetiology of the disorder.
