History of
Hockey
History:
It is assumed that the British soldiers brought field hockey to North America in the mid 1800s. The British soldiers resided in Nova Scotia played the earliest hockey games in Canada. The name hockey-- as the organized game came to be known-- has been attributed to the French word hoquet; translated as sheperds stick.
By the 1870s a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal developed the first known set of hockey rules. It wasnt until 1900 that the goal net was introduced. With the new hockey rules known as McGill Rules a rubber ball was used instead of a puck, and the number of players on a team was set at nine.
In 1885 Montreal became the location for the first national hockey organization and they lowered the number of players on a team to seven. The number of players was eventually lowered to six in 1912.
In 1888 The Amateur Hockey Association of Canada (AHAC) was founded, with four teams in Montreal, one in Ottawa, and one in Quebec City.
Hockey spread south to the United States in the 1890s......
