The last decade of the 19th century was known as the ‘belle époque’ or (beautiful era). In France, the turn of the century brought the dawning of a new age and a new attitude towards life. It was a time when Paris flaunted its song, dance, sports and fashion industries- an era where the passionate vitality and joie de vivre of Paris were brought to life. There were more places to go: music halls, vaudeville shows and popular entertainment at the circus, the racetracks and the brothels. An aristocrat from the country, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec lived an abandoned life in the city and chose his surroundings as his subjects- cabarets, bars and bordellos. These forms of popular leisure had been the subject matter of many modern paintings for some time, but they were also the themes in which Lautrec himself lived. His bold and vibrant paintings represent the heart and soul of this era. Lautrec is said to have been fascinated by the total spontaneousness and unpredictability of the working-class girls in the cabarets and brothels of Montmartre.
