Feste, The fool in Twelfth Night Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Feste, the fool has an important role through out the play. Like many of Shakespeare’s other clowns and fools, Feste provides the audience with amusement and a reality of Elizabethan society. While playing the role of a fool, Feste makes many statements proving that he is very intelligent. His playing with words and his witty exchanges with other characters show us how bright he actually is. With his intelligent remarks and amusing songs, Feste does not only entertain the reader but also raises the question of who is the real fool within the play. In Twelfth Night, Shakespeare uses Feste as an entertainer, a commentator on Elizabethan society, to foreshadow events and most importantly to emphasize the theme of “pretending” through out the play. Shakespeare used fools in many of his plays. They provided the audience with amusement through a stereotypical character which was a tradition in Elizabethan culture.
