The Tyrant’s Transition The famous philosopher and writer, Baltasar Gracian, once said, “Never open the door to a lesser evil, for other and greater ones invariably slink in after it.” Purposely doing something wrong and immoral leads to greater problems in the future. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, written in 1606, the transition from good to evil is displayed by the protagonist, Macbeth. At first, he is a noble citizen, courageous and strong. As the play progresses, Macbeth transforms into a cruel person. The witches plant a seed in the back of his mind, telling him he will be named King, which continues growing until the end. When Lady Macbeth hears of the prophecies, she is convinced they are true and will do anything to be Queen. Throughout Macbeth, his ambition is constantly being encouraged, and eventually backfires. The influences of the Witches, Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth’s own never ending ambition lead him to become a tyrannical ruler. The prophecies of the witches play a vital role in Macbeth.
