Southern Ontario Land Use Planning Report
The plan that was adopted by the Provincial government of Ontario is called the Greenbelt
Project. It was passed by the legislation on February 24, 2005 in Queens park. It was agreed by all
parties including the Conservatives and NDP. The Greenbelt project was developed by the
Liberals in order to protect valuable land from urban development. The plan will protect about 1
million acres of sensitive land and agricultural land in the Golden Horseshoe Conservation Plan..
It also includes about 800,000 acres of land in the Niagara Escarpment area and Oak Ridges
Moraine. This plan will be used in partnership with all the other plans in the area including the
Ministers zoning orders of the Planning Act, the Greater Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan and
other provincial land use plans.
The objectives of the Greenbelt plan include:
