childhood Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

My memory goes back to 1981, when I was six years old. I was born in the village "El Arbolito" which pierced the heart of the tropical rain forest near the border of Guatemala and Mexico. During that time, Guatemala was experiencing one of the most violent periods of its history. However, for those of us in the village, the war was an unknown and distant problem in our daily lives. Our rural life was far removed from the problems and rhythms of life in Guatemala City. One day, rumours arrived in the village that we had to protect ourselves because the army was clearing out all the neighbouring villages by killing the inhabitants and burning their homes--and we were next on the list. We didn't pay attention; we would not have known what to do anyway. The days elapsed with our daily routines and without any more information about the sad fate of neighbouring villages. Then came a day I will never forget. As usual, we got up with the morning song of the roosters. I was helping my mother prepare the corn to take it to the mill when, suddenly, soldiers appeared and announced with loud ......
