The Natural and the Supernatural in Keats’s ”La Belle Dame sans Merci” At the end of the 18th century, Europe saw the end of the dominance of the Renaissance tradition. Science faced an enormous development, therefore the lives of people was dominated by reason and logics. Mathematics, physics, biology and the rest of the sciences started to dominate the physical world, while the mental world was mainly concerned by theories of Locke. The first signs of mass industrialization began to appear, the importance of the individual as such seemed to pale into insignificance. This new period (beginning around 1780) did not only welcome some rather radical changes in science, philosophy, religion, and politics, but this new era did also have an overwhelmingly great effect on visual arts, music, and literature. Though the term „romantic” originally derives from the Old French word ”romans”, meaning a vernacular language descended from Latin, by the 17th century the English meaning of the word changes into imaginative, fictious, fabolous or even extravagant.
