"Who dah?" This is Jim's first line, which is also the novel's first line of dialogue. It's a good question for Jim to ask
because one of the greatest issues raised in the novel is "who is there" as far as Jim is concerned -- a human being or a piece of property? What makes Huck decide to "go to hell" in the scene that most critics call the most important part in huckleberry Finn is that he can "see Jim" instead of the figure his community has told him is, "Miss Watson's nigger." The conflict between society and Huck is a theme portrayed throughout Twain's Huckleberry Finn. Huck was not raised in the accepted ways of his community. Huck faces many moral issues in society, which makes him choose his own individuality instead of conforming to society. He practically raises himself, relying on instinct to guide him through life. As portrayed several times in the novel, Huck chooses to follow his innate sense of right, yet he does not realize that his own instincts are more moral than those of society.
