ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST The novel One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest (in future known as “OFOTCN”) written by Ken Kesey presents a completely different way of looking at mental health issues. The narrator, Chief Bromden, is a schizophrenic who suffers from paranoia and hallucinations. His unusual state of mind provides metaphorical insight into the insidious reality of the hospital as well as society in general. Chief Bromden pretends to be deaf and dumb at Oregon Mental Hospital. This makes him privy to secret staff information that is kept from other patients, which makes him a more reliable narrator than any other patient would be. Therefore the novel’s tone is somewhat critical and allegorical. This hospital is presented as a metaphor for the oppressive society of the late 1950s. The protagonist is Randal P McMurphy. His use mischief and humour to undermine authority seems to echo the author’s attitudes. McMurphy is a big, redhead gambler whose body is heavily scarred and tattooed. He was sentenced to six months at a prison work farm and when he was diagnosed ......
