The 23 of October 1940 could be the most important day in the whole history of Brazilian soccer. On that day a legend was born! Perhaps the greatest soccer player to ever set foot on an area of play, made his first appearance in a poor district called Tres Corappoes. His parents were Dondinho and Celeste Nascimento. Who could have guessed that their small baby would one day astonish the world with his talent? The child Edson Arantes do Nascimento, soon became Pelé, the legend. Rumor has it that the Irish missionaries who taught him at school gave him this nickname. Pelé, it seems, was the local form of the Irish world for soccer, which is peil.
Although he was born into a poor district, nothing was to stop a man who was born to play what he termed "The beautiful game". He was taught to play initially by his father who had been a player until a fractured leg stopped his career. Even his mother, who was absolutely against soccer as a career because of this, was not to deny his destiny.
