Cause & Effect: When humans threaten natural resources, their only defense is God. Trees are at an extreme risk. As the demand for paper and wood products rise, logging is dramatically increasing. Two of the major effects of destructive clear-cut logging are blowdown and landslides, while one of the leading supporters of the logging industry is the U.S. President. Some trees are usually in small patches, and are often left standing when an area is clear-cut logged. Because these trees are now very exposed, they are knocked down by wind. This is called blowdown. Fierce winter winds make trees in logged areas especially vulnerable to blowdown. This affect has been known to cause trees in small patches to fall one after another like dominoes. Until trees in a second-growth forest reach the same height as the surrounding forest that was not logged, they will remain prone to blowdown.
