Hamlet's Women Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Hamlet’s Women Gender and sexuality have always been of great interest to lovers of Shakespearean and Elizabethan theater, partly because so many of his heroines bend and break the rules yet somehow mirror the established behavior for Elizabethan women, particularly married and unmarried women. Although theater of this nature was held in high regard, Elizabethan theater often echoed the social norms for women throughout Shakespeare’s life. Characters such as Gertrude and Ophelia in Shakespeare’s renowned play Hamlet are much more articulate, clever, and outspoken than the modest, timid woman Elizabethan’s upheld as the ideal. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet upheld the similar relationship between the portrayals of Gertrude and Ophelia’s characters and how women during the Elizabethan era were viewed and treated, thus advocating conventional standards for women in society. The character of Gertrude in Hamlet is vulnerable and loving in nature, and is treated throughout the play as such.
