TRADITIONAL ETHICS In the passage “Do As I Say, Not As I do”, Amitai Etzioni says that the best way to teach children ethics is to make them experience the righteousness, high moral standards, equality, and honesty that along with the academics that are presented in published materials. An example he uses to highlight his point is a teacher named Jane Elliot at Community Elementary school in Riceville, Iowa. Ms. Elliot tried to teach her students ethical morality by making them experience morality rather than learning through published materials. She separated the brown-eyed and blue-eyed students, and discriminated against the blue-eyed, prohibiting them from playing on the playground with the others, which in turn made the brown-eyed students discriminate against the blue-eyed students as well. She reversed the roles the next day so everybody could have a chance to experience the value of ethics.
