One of the questions that plagues King Lear by William Shakespeare is whether or not the protagonist is truly mad. And if so, at which point in the play, and under what circumstances, is this decline triggered? The madness that Lear experiences in the play is a finely tuned psychological study of the journey from an existence as a sovereign to that of a self-aware man. When the audience first meets Lear he is a king in the truest sense of the word, ostentatious and obstinate. Lear is unable to operate as both the body natural and the body politic, and, thus, is an agent of his own destruction when his decree to divide up his kingdom becomes the catalyst for his eventual exclusion. However, the betrayal of his two eldest daughters drives Lear mad. This loss of identity and a chance encounter with a beggar on the heath helps Lear see the truth about how to achieve happiness.
