Odysseus' Expired Guests Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The many episodes to the struggle of Odysseus on his quest to return home, present a myriad of societies which he encounters along the journey, each of which possess its own distinctive attribute, deeming it a unique civilization. Through OdysseusÂ’ adventures in these different social worlds, the defining elements and values true to that society unfold, revealing the social foundations and institutions to which that society was built upon. A reoccurring value however, touched upon by Homer in The Odyssey for every culture introduced, was that of the relationship between the society as a host and its guests. Although hospitality may have been idealized by Homer as being a chief principle constituting a first rate society, the array of societies sojourned by Odysseus on his voyage create a spectrum of the hospitality found in the visited cultures throughout the epic.
