Because I Coild Not Stop for Death Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” Emily Dickinson uses personification to help the reader understand death on a more intimate level. Dickinson also uses a haunting, almost eerie, tone to create the tranquil mood in this poem. Dickinson’s use of personification tells the reader that death can be kind. The manner in which she changes the tone three times in this poem lets the reader know Dickinson wants the reader to understand the journey through life to get to death. Dickinson personifies death as someone who picks the speaker up and takes them on a journey through life. But, her choice of words to describe death is atypical. Dickinson portrays death as a gracious person. This is first seen in the second line in the first stanza when Dickinson says “He kindly stopped for me.” By using the word kindly it shows ‘death’ was meant to be portrayed as a compassionate person. Dickinson wants to portray death as a compassionate person to show that no one should be afraid of death. In the second stanza the first line says “We slowly drove- He knew no haste.” By......
