Walter Rodneys, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, is a very interesting book because he takes a much different perspective than most other writers. Unlike most stories about Africa, this book is written by a black person in Africa, from a Third World country. This book broke the Eurocentric conceptions of African history and became one of the most widely-read and influential books on Africa and the third world in general.
The slave trade proved very profitable for the Europeans from the first. Rodney quotes the example of the English hero John Hawkins who, financed by Queen Elizabeth I, stole African to sell to the Spanish in America. When Elizabeth knighted Hawkins, he chose for his coat or arms the representation of an African in chains. As many as one hundred million Africans may have been enslaved by the end of the 19th century.
