Australias political framework comprises federalism and responsible government. Are these components compatible? Explain.
Since 1901 Australias political system has combined federalism, based on Americas federal system, with Britains Westminster system, incorporating the accepted convention of responsible government . These distinct influences may be reason why the marriage between federalism and responsible government does not exist without conflict . When compatible is defined as being capable of existing together in harmony , Australias political framework does not wholly comply. Yet, the amalgamation of these two distinct systems has, for one hundred years, facilitated the effective operation of liberal democracy in Australia. In seeking to clarify these components, weaknesses in the partnership are exposed. The difficulties in attributing accountability under federalism and the occasional re-interpretation, by government, of the responsible government convention are some of the problems existing between the two.
