The Meaning behind "The Great Gatsby" F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St Paul, Minnesota of mixed Southern and Irish descent. His father, Edward Fitzgerald, was a salesman, who had a furniture business that had failed. Mary McQuillan, his mother, was the daughter of a successful wholesale grocer, and devoted her life to her only son. The family moved regularly, but finally settled in 1918 in St. Paul. At the age of 18, Fitzgerald fell in love with a sixteen-year-old girl by the name of Ginerva King. Later on he went on to attend Princeton University until he left his studies in 1917 because of his poor academic records, and took up a commission in the US Army. His experiences during World War I were more peaceful than Hemingway's and he never saw action and did not even go to France. Fitzgerald married wife Zelda on April 1920 after convincing her he was wealthy enough for her after selling "This Side Of Paradise." Him and his wife became the talk of the town, know as a golden couple who personified the stylish, reckless living of New York's "Jazz Age" in the Twenties......
