CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS – 1962 With Soviet nuclear missiles being installed is Cuba, and a seemingly imminent US invasion, the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 was an event where the protocol of the cold war was almost forgotten, putting the world on the brink of nuclear war. At the peak of the crisis, US forces were at their highest state of readiness ever, and the soviet commanders were prepared to use nuclear weapons if the island of Cuba was invaded. It has been revealed that had a US invasion of Cuba been carried out that there was “a 99 percent probability that a nuclear war would have been initiated.” Only through common sense and sober minded negotiation, especially on the part of President Kennedy was war avoided. The Cuban Missile crisis origins lead back to the long standing mistrust between the worlds superpowers, however a series of circumstances leading up to the crisis give explanation to why it eventuated.
