John Updike’s “Separating”: A Family in Transition Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In John Updike’s “Separating” we witness the emotional impact that the dissolution of a marriage has on a family. The theme of this story centers on family dynamics and how those dynamics are affected in a situation such as divorce or separation. Separating brings to the surface many issues that may have been buried for a long time and can cause turmoil in a once peaceful environment. It is a painful process, one that reveals a wide range of emotions. Some of those emotions can be betrayal, fear, indifference, outrage, acceptance, relief, or sorrow. In “Separating,” Richard and Joan have decided to separate and now are faced with the difficult task of telling their four teenaged children about their decision. Richard thinks that they should tell them all at the same time to get it out in the open, but Joan’s approach is to tell each one individually since she is sure that each will react differently. Richard relents and agrees to do it Joan’s way. In the end, however, the truth of their separation comes out at a dinner celebration welcoming their nineteen year old daug......
