Guatemala is the third largest country in Central America. It is made up of three types of geographic regions: Highlands, lowlands, and a costal plain, although Guatemala is mainly mountains. (http://www.ppu.org.uk/genocide/g_guatemala.html 05/21/05.) Guatemalans take much pride in their ancestry Mayan Indian lands. They like to preserve the Native Indian culture or color, flavor, and music. Some exports that they produce in Guatemala are coffee (smoky and spicy), Cardamom (a spice in the ginger family), bananas, and cotton. Around 1954 José Efraín Ríos Montt was elected in to Guatemalan presidence. (http://www.ppu.org.uk/genocide/g_guatemala.html 05/21/05.) Six years later a 36 year civil war broke out between the Guatemalan army and the Guatemalan guerillas. The Guatemalans ended up murdering over 200,000 civilians for land, information and game. The civil war many times became known as “The Silent Houlacaust.” The army would rape, beat and murder women and children, men would be forced to fight for them.
