PII Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles (PII) is a tenet of analytic ontology, explicitly expressed for the first time by Wilhelm Leibniz in his Discourse on Metaphysics (Leibniz, 1991). Often referred to as Leibniz's Law, it is generally understood to mean that no two objects have exactly the same properties. If there is no conceivable way of differentiating A from B, then A is B, or more precisely, A is B if and only if all the attributes and properties of A are also attributes of B and vice versa. PII is of interest in the context of discourse on Philosophy of Space because it is used by Leibniz as a foundation for his arguments in support of a Relationist concept of space. The Principle raises important questions about the factors that individuate qualitatively identical objects; questions that we will attempt to show are sufficiently challenging to refute the validity of the Principle.
It would seem prudent to first address the more obvious supporting argument for PII; the simple question of how the Principle could fail to be true. If there are two distinct thing......
