Plastic surgery is more popular than ever. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), doctors performed nearly 8.5 million cosmetic procedures in 2005, what is a high increase from 2004. The rise of plastic surgery is due in part to society's increasing acceptance of artificial beautification. The number of surgical procedures increased 12 percent and the number of nonsurgical procedures increased 22 percent from 2002 (American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Statistics, 2003 ). In a February 2005 ASAPS survey, 34% of women and 19% of men said they would consider having plastic surgery.
But why do so many Americans put themselves under the knife? One reason for this is the enormous influence of the media in America, like the TV, which affects the American culture a lot. Everyone is born with different traits and unique qualities; they are their own person. Isnt that considered beautiful? In todays society, it seems as though this isnt the case.
