Katrina Gaar English 8/P5 Sandra Mittleman 24 March 2005 Living the Life of a Slave Dehumanization: “to deprive of human qualities, such as individuality, compassion, civility, personality, or spirit” (Dictionary). Frederick Douglass was a slave who was dehumanized, along with many other African Americans. In the book The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Written by Himself, Frederick portrays how life as a slave was survived, and shows us a clear bold picture of how it existed in the 1800s. Slaves had to overcome many hindrances, which incorporated education, escape, and punishment. Many slaves never learned how to read, or write. Frederick Douglass was one of the few slaves that are able to have the privilege to learn, or choose to learn by themselves, as Frederick Douglass did. “If you teach that nigger (speaking of myself) how to read, there would be no keeping him.
