Jane Eyre, from the beginning of the novel, has had very simple needs- to give and receive love, to feel a sense of belonging, to maintain her independence and to be treated as an equal. Jane’s childhood denied her all these needs. Once her uncle died she was treated cruelly by her Aunt Reed and she encouraged her own children to ridicule Jane. She was also constantly reminded of her difference to the Reed children and never felt she belonged at Gateshead, instead feeling she was just a burden to bear there. But living at Gateshead exposed her streak of independence- a trait that stays with her and is what defines her character. Her time at Lowood did little to satisfy her needs, although came closer than living at Gateshead did. She was again treated unequal, this time due to her social standing and lacked that feeling she was welcome within those walls. But she also gains a level of love from Helen Burns and Miss Temple and learns so much from both characters. Her independent spirit is still present, and her self identity continued to develop.’ But it’s at Thornfield Ha......
