Claes Oldenburg, son of a Swedish diplomat was born in Stockholm and moved to New York with his family at a very early age. During his literature degree at Yale University he worked as a childrens book illustrator, before moving to the Chicago institute of art. He then moved to New York and joined a group of young abstract Expressionists who propelled him into the public artistic eye.
