Jane Eyre- rich and poor comparison Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

A reoccurring theme in Jane Eyre is the comparison between the rich and poor and how they are perceived in society. Jane Eyre is generally of low class in the novel and is constantly surrounded by the wealthy in the various stages of her life and has been subjected to the cruelties shown by those of higher social standing. In Jane’s years at Gateshead, her Aunt Reed, her cousins and the servants constantly told her she was living in such luxury due to Mrs Reed’s charity: “They will have a great deal of money and you will have none: it is your place to be humble and try to make yourself agreeable to them.” It is clear that Jane was only thought of as a burden by the Reed family, even at such an early age. Jane also has a clear understanding of how the poor were treated and viewed in society at this time, and even at the chance to escape the conditions she endures at Gateshead, she refuses to even consider living with her ‘poor’ relations, as Mrs Reed had spoken of them: “No I should not like to belong to the poor people”, was my reply” Even Jane knew as a child that liv......
