Discuss the significance of the following extract from “Death Of A Salesman” P21-26: Biff-Happy-Willy-Bernard Death of a Salesman is set in the late nineteen-forties/ early nineteen-fifties and is located in Brooklyn, New York, United States. The play addresses the painful conflicts within one family, but it also tackles larger issues regarding American national values. It examines the cost of blind faith in the American Dream as well as the extreme craving for success and superiority in the world. Miller portrays America as a country selling a false myth built around a materialism which obscures personal truth and moral vision. Many critics regard Death of A Salesman as the first great American tragedy. It is often compared to many of the great Greek tragedies and is in keeping with a long literary tradition of tragedy. The choice of tragic hero, the eternal underdog, contrasts deeply with that of Shakespearian tragedy where he is of very high status.
