Love, religion and the Renaissance Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Religion and love were major influencing forces in the way that monarchs ruled, writers wrote, and in the motives for exploration during the time of the Renaissance. Due to the conflicts between the Christians and Muslims there was a high demand for new trade routes to Asia, which provided stimulus for Columbus’s explorations. Columbus was a very religious man. He wrote Book of Prophecies, and read the Bible from which he derived many of the convincing arguments he used to gain support for his trip. Columbus even shows his gratitude to G-d by giving San Salvador its name which means Holy Savior, “in honor of God who had pointed it out to him and saved him from many dangers.” Mary Queen of Scots was a devout Catholic who ruled a Protestant country. She had a stable government until the Protestant lords rebelled and she was forced to flee Scotland. Despite the fact that she was in prison, as rightful heir to the throne of England, many English Catholics hoped that with Mary as ruler the reestablishment of Catholicism would occur.
