“In King Lear, to what extent does Shakespeare present the view that life is not always fair? The idea that life is not always just is a thought seen throughout Shakespeare’s works and in particular King Lear. What is seen as just or unjust for many people is determined in how the villains and righteous characters within the play are persecuted. For some characters they are persecuted for crimes that never existed, some are continuously punished for mistakes made in the first act and for others even the ultimate punishment of death is too light a punishment for their evil deeds. Cordelia and Kent; two of the most righteous characters seen throughout the play, experience the first case of injustice at the hands of Cordelia’s own father Lear. In an attempt to divide his kingdom between his three daughters; Regan, Goneril and Cordelia Lear conjured up a love contest in which each girl was to declare their love towards him. Lear actually creates two injustices within the first act by welcoming the words of his first two daughters who spoke only out of greed and contempt and......
