Gwen Hardood's Poetry Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Gwen Harwood, in her poems The Secret Life of Frogs, Littoral and The Violets celebrates the cycles within the natural world, as well as the human emotional connection within it. The poems also connect with the innocence and beauty within childhood as Harwood delves into the past, describing lovely images from memories that have since passed. Harwood often moves from that of childhood voice to the adult, reminiscent of the ingenuous folly of herself as a young girl, ‘things I could not grasp or name’, never allowing herself to stay tranquil in one area of thought as each stanza conveys a new idea and feeling. Within Littoral, Harwood delves into the picturesque image of a woman walking along the beach, connecting with the natural world that surrounds her and becoming apart of the cycles within it, ‘where past and future come / to the fine edge of clarity’. Littoral is voiced by and older woman reminiscing, it is possibly sharing the same narrative voice as The Secret Life of Frogs and The Violets.
