In Phillip Gwynne’s novel Deadly, Unna? Gary Black is a 14 year old boy confronted by his country town’s unchanging views on what a man should be and their ever growing harsh racism. Gary Black, however, rejects their stereotypes, instead following his own ideas and beliefs by doing what he sees as right. The views are shown to Blacky from many angles, including his role models and the town’s general population. The town presents Blacky with ideas about manhood wherever he goes, be it footy, the pub or hanging out with his mates. When Blacky is in the pub he is constantly seeing men drinking beer and ignoring their wives. Rocker from the pubs wife hates him coming to the pub and he never listens to her telling him to come home. “She was always ringing up” (pg.158) This is generally accepted by the men at the pub and is their regular behaviour. They also make racist jokes about Nungas and laugh at them. The men at the pubs ideas are also mimicked by Blacky’s friends, the town’s youth.
