Nature versus Nurture: A Growing Debate Heredity is a well-known word in the world of genetics. Heredity can be defined as the “transmission of characteristics and potentialities from ancestor to descendant through genes” (582).It is how we get our mom’s nose or our dad’s eyes. But what if genes could also have something to do with how we develop, how we talk, or how smart we are? This is what geneticists are trying to find out. They want to be able to know for sure that genes control most of our characteristics. However, heredity is not the only way that characteristics can form. Heredity shares its duty with the environment. Environment, or nurture, also helps shape our lives. So, which factor is the predominant? Although the evidence may lean towards the heredity or nature side, this question is yet to be answered. So, what exactly are the arguments of each side? Geneticists and “Darwinists” believe that our habits, thought processes, and characteristics come from our genes......
