Transformation - Emma to Clueless Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Emma/ Clueless Model Essay It has been stated that “In the process of transforming older texts into contemporary situations, composers are more concerned with entertaining the masses than making a serious comment on society.” However, whoever said this clearly had not encountered Clueless, Amy Heckerling’s transformation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Both composers sought to entertain their target audience through satire, comedy of errors, romance and happy endings, but they also sought to educate them as well. In representing their respective societies, they seriously comment on the values of elitism, lack of perception, selfishness, and the need for personal growth. Therefore, any suggestion that Clueless is somehow less worthy when compared to Emma is based upon high-cultural snobbery rather than fact. Through their representations of elitism in their texts, both Austen and Heckerling make equally entertaining and educative comments on their worlds. Austen’s character of Emma is satirised through her elitist response to Harriet’s consideration of Mr Martin as a prospect......
