In 1750 there was not one "American" colonial society, but three regional social orders united by political bonds of the British Empire and the common English origins of the majority of their inhabitants (Jernegan 35). The three different sections of the thirteen colonies are; the New England region, the Mid-Atlantic region, and the South region. The New England colonies consisted of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire, the Mid-Atlantic colonies were Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Delaware while the Southern colonies consisted of Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. By the time of the French and Indian War, however, these colonies had started to bond together to fight as one. New England began as a refuge for religious radicals. The first English settlers were the Pilgrims. They were separatists, Protestants who, unlike the Puritans, seceded from the Church of England rather than try to reform it.
