On a sunny day in May, I made a visit to the Huntington GardenGalleries. At the gallery I was to choose an original piece of art that wasdone in the time period and geographic emphasis of my Western Art HistoryClass. In this gallery I saw The Portrait of Pauline Astor (1898-99) byJohn Singer Sargent. I picked the portrait because I remembered the namePauline Astor from when I was a child; I had visited her family's estate inNewport, Rhode Island, which was one of many in the family's possession.The funny little dog that was tugging at her dress also influenced me towrite on the portrait. The dog seems to add some needed comedy to thepiece. The dog brings the portrait away from the norm. This piece wasSargent's largest and most impressive full-length portrait in a LandscapeSetting.According to my research on the Huntington Library Website theportrait depicts Pauline Astor. Pauline was the oldest daughter of theAmerican Financier William Waldorf Astor, who also happened to be one ofthe richest men in the world.
