Examine the presentation of the women in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. In Shakespeare’s tragedy, ‘Hamlet’, the women in the play are presented in contrasting ways. Considering the culture of the time, both women are shown to be weak and subservient to men, which was the norm at that period. However, both women seem to have two sides to them, appearing at times ignorant and naïve, and at others assertive and well knowing of their situation. We see weaknesses in both women’s characters through looking closely at the relationships each character has with others in the play. Gertrude is generally subservient and obedient to Claudius, as he is her king and the key to her social status. There are places in the play where she seems to reflect and repeat what Claudius has said; for example ‘why is it the clouds still hang on you? (Claudius), with Gertrude also referring to the dark night saying ‘cast thy knighted colour off’. Although she doesn’t outwardly disagree with Claudius, because he is her king and essentially the only man keeping her status high, she agrees with Hamlet quit......
