The theory of social construction of gender is described as a pattern of behaviours acknowledged as masculine or feminine. It is historically and socially constructed, learned behaviour. Burr (1995) explains that gender, sexuality, education, class, age and race are all constructed through our discourses of our culture. Every day we receive many messages about gender. Living in our surrounding environment exposes us to many images of discourses about appropriate and desirable feminine and masculine identities Holland (2004). This article reports on research findings which indicate that the social construction of gender has been created through history, by the power of discourses and images produced through magazines. The images that are deconstructed are pictures form magazines, which target femininity throughout 2005. This article grounds the theory of why it is important for children to have access to imagery and activities which promote new forms of social relations and where new patterns of power and discourse are discovered (Burr 1995).
