The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini This is Amir's story. He tells his fascinating and dramatic story in the first person. Born into the priviledged Pashtun tribe, the son of a wealthy businessman he grows up together with Hassan - a hare-lipped child of the lowly Hazara tribe who is his servant and his friend. The story centers on the boys' relationship; both boys are motherless and were breastfed together by the same wet-nurse. Hassan's first word was "Amir" and Amir feels overwhelmed and undeserving of the unquestioning love and selfless devotion that Hassan has for him. Added to this there is the deep jealousy and resentment of the attention and affection that his father Baba gives to Hassan which Amir feels should be only for himself. Amir ashamedly finds himself testing Hassan's loyalty often with spitefulness and even cruelty and eventually because of his own cowardice sacrifices Hassan to rape by the neighborhood bully in order to win his father's approval. Following the rape, Amir is wracked with guilt and because; even looking at Hassan reminds him of his own......
