Abraham Lincoln Essay Period 7 Abraham Lincoln, a sectional candidate whose election led to secession of the South, succeeded in restoring the Union and laying a strong foundation for its future greatness. Both Lincolns military policies and his domestic programs helped to make him on of the most effective presidents in American history. Abraham Lincoln was born to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. Neither of his parents was politically involved, but was involved in a Baptist congregation. That congregation had separated from another due to resistance to slavery. Abraham Lincoln ran for the Illinois legislature as a part of the Whig party, of which he remained a part of until 1856 when he became a Republican when the Whig party disintegrated over the question of slavery. In 1846 Lincoln was elected in the House of Representatives for a term. Lincoln opposed the Mexican War, started by James K. Polk, president of the United States at the time.
